What lies beyond death, and what would you do if you had only few days to live?
Despite an abundance of comforts and conveniences, why do many still feel dissatisfied, empty, and lacking in purpose? Are day-today occurrences in life predestined, or is life interplay of fate and free will? In this book, his divine grace AC Bhakitvedenta Swami Prabhupada and his followers address the most crucial questions of our existence.
A small extract from the book on below topic will find you thinking and set your mind alight
Properties of Life (Atma)
There are inumerate atmas –or living entities –each being a quantum of consciousness. Each atma resides temporarily in a biological form in our body according to consciousness. This consciousness is due to atma alone but the content of consciousness is due to its interactions with the particular body it occupies. The material body is sub-divided into 2 parts –the gross and the subtle.
The subtle body is up of our mind, intelligence and the apparent self which is the false identification living within the material body. The Gross body is made up of elements such as solid matter, liquids, radiant energy, gas and other substances. The interaction of gross and subtle body produces complex reactions which cannot be explained by chemistry or physics in the living cell. When the individual being lives the body, the live body becomes dead matter –although all the chemicals necessary to function the body of living organism are still present.
Consciousness and Biological form –according to Veda, varieties of life forms are products and permutations of the 3 modes of material nature –goodness, passion and ignorance. The life forms like temporary houses of various size, shape in which the self living being resides temporariliy. Biological forms governed by the three modes put a constraint on the qualities and activities of living beings consciousness. Thus the living being in a tiger's body will roar loudly and kill animals for food whislt the living being in a swans body will fly gracefully and swim on lakes. These differences are caused by the three modes also apply to the human form as well since it is the behaviour of our consciousness that determines at the time of death what form we will take next.
Reincarnation and the change of Body
Now the question arises –"What determines particular biological form and type of consciousness that a living being acquires?" Consciousness and biological form are interrelated due to the influence of three modes of nature –thus a child body and conscious development is different than those of youthful stage and so on. Body state will change from boyhood to old age, the living being or atma will pass through many bodies of various ages and varieities of conscious development. But what about the living being passage to a new body at the time of death?
There is no scientific theory about process of reincarnation. But the Vedas tell us from Bhagvat gita (Gita 2.22) "Just as a person puts on new garments giving up old ones, similarlarly the individual being or entity accept new material bodies, giving up old and useless ones"
Lord Krishna further explains that the mind is the mechanism underlying all these transmigrations –"whatever state of being one remembers when he quits his body, that state he will attain without fail in his next life"
So a living entity in a man's body could go into the body of an animal, a bird or insect or another human and so on. This journey into different bodies is referred to as external reincarnation or transmigration. This was proven with King Bharata one great vedic scholar in vedic times. At a river bank a pregnant deer was so scared by roar of a lion that it gave birth to young deer and died. King Bharata took compassion and rescued the calf and cared for it affectionaltely. He gradually became attached to young deer and as it grew up, his mind got agitated from his meditation and became very absorbed in deer well being and caring. One day deer got lost and his search began and fell down and King died. Because at the time of his death, his mind was so engrossed with deer, he naturally took birth in his next life in the womb of a deer.
Go back to the subtle body –made of mind, intelligence and apparent self. In either kind of reincarnation, the living being is carried by the subtle body under the laws of karma. Karma is defined as "the function and activity of living entirty within the framework of his free will and under the influence of the three modes of material nature over a span of time"
For every action living being will take there will be an appropriate reaction. Thus we arrive at a definition of reincarnation –"as the continuous journey of the living entity from one body to another internally or externally under the stringent laws of his individual karma"
Science of self-realization
Vedas instructs us that ultimate goal of all knowledge is break free from repeated cycle of birth and death and begin to question into the nature of Absolute Truth. What is purpose of my existence, who am I and How Can I get out of repeated cycle and this process is the Science of self realization.
Bhakti Yoga is process of getting accurate knowledge from higher sources to break from this chain of cycles but to one's mind must be free from the contamination of lower modes of nature such as impurities, false pride or ego, which impels us and control over senses and make it harmonious with nature. To control and train the mind then follow certain discipline to listen and hear vibrations called mantras. The most important mantra given to us in the VEDAS is
Chant Hare Krsna Hare Krsna krsna krnsa hare hare/hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare…
This mantra each day 108 times is the easiest effective method to purify mind of contamination and influence of lower modes of nature and by chanting this, the mind gets pure which means geradually our consciousness will become purer and purer and real indentity revealed to us and at the time of death, our state of mind will take us to a higher form.
