Reiki is a Japanese word -Rei and Ki. Rei meaning
Universal and ki meaning Life Force Energy. It is
defined as the energy which is responsible for life
in ourselves. This energy is everywhere in the universe
and in abundance. The life which is called as "Prana"
by Hindus, and "Chi" by Chinese.
Reiki healing system is based on ancient Tibetan
knowledge rediscovered by Japanese Professor Dr Mikao
Usui. In this system Reiki Practioners or channels
can pass on Universal Life energy to themselves and
others thereby energising and healing them. The energy
is simply passed on to self and others by laying on
hands -a simple "touch and heal" system.
In order to become a channel for Reiki, the person
must be attuned by a Reiki Master through a process
of learning the Chakra System. The "Chakras"
are spiral energy centres which exist in ourselves
and responsible for energy flow. If these energy centres
are attuned -the person will begin to energise and
automatically begin to heal any ailments.
Over the years, Reiki seems to have dealt successfully
with most problems and disorders, and has found to
be effective in a wide range of conditions. However,
there is no 'proper' scientific evidence to back up
any claims made about the effectiveness of Reiki treatments
other than experiences of people.
The general effect of a course of Reiki treatments
is to produce a feeling of being 'laid back', calm
and serene, more able to cope. If energy levels are
low then they will be boosted, if spirits are low
then they will be lifted; it makes you feel more positive
and brings things back into balance.
These same effects are produced if you become attuned
to Reiki yourself, since you can focus the energy
on yourself by way of regular self-treatments. When
you treat others you also receive some benefit from
the Reiki energy that is flowing through you, so you
are balanced yourself as you share the energy with
It has been said that Reiki seems to produce fast
and long-lasting results in almost all cases of:
- Stress, tension, anxiety and related symptoms
- Emotional turmoil and discord
- Feeling unable to cope
- Low spirits, depression
...even when these problems have continued unresolved
for years, Reiki treatments at weekly intervals would
seem to be enough to produce long-term beneficial
changes in these areas.
Physical problems do seem to take longer to shift
sometimes, but again some users have vouched Reiki
being successful with all of the following, and others
- Sports injuries
- Long term pain, e.g. back pain
- Rheumatism, arthritis, sciatica, scoliosis
- Low energy levels
A whole range of problems
One lady had an auto-immune condition that gave
her joint pains, she had low energy levels, and sciatica.
She was extremely stressed at work, and going through
a difficult period with her ex-husband (a Director
of the company she still worked for). Over a course
of 6-7 treatments the sciatica disappeared, the joint
aches eased, and energy levels rose. She started to
redecorate her house, something she just would not
have done before because she ached and had no energy.
She felt a lot better about her work, with all the
office politics and bitchiness washing over her, and
her encounters with her ex-husband were no longer
the problem they had been.
This is what she said:
"I have had five sessions on Reiki and I
am managing my condition so very much better and feel
fitter and healthier than I have for years. The most
marked effect is on my 'spirit'. My stress level has
decreased dramatically and I feel so calm, and more
able to cope."

A painful limp
A gentleman had a painful limp. He had been to
a Doctor and had tried a variety of conventional treatments
including physiotherapy, but to no avail. This was
a real pain for him because he had several large dogs
that he loved to take for long walks in the countryside.
His painful limp prevented him from doing this. Five
treatments got rid of the limp, and most of the pain,
and he now walks his dogs happily again! How Reiki
produces such effects no-one knows.
Another gentleman messed his back up as a teenager,
by doing a lot of heavy lifting on a farm. Now 25
years later he was plagued by 'back trouble' and whenever
he did work in his garden or on his land, he could
have severe pain for days. After the first two Reiki
treatments, his back 'clicked in' within half an hour.
We did 6 in total. The problem has not reappeared,
despite him having bought a house to renovate, involving
a lot of heavy work. This is what he said:
"To think that after all these years and
the worry, all it took was some mystical mumbo-jumbo
and hand waving. It's a puzzle to me. How it works
defies my logic, but the fact that it has for me is
indisputable. After just four sessions it became much
easier to 'click back in'; now a few months later
I have done some tremendously hard and heavy work
and my back seems to have stopped clicking out altogether."
Today, there are growing qualified practioners in
Reiki offering a range of treatments to make you feel
better. As very often with such therapies finding
a very good and qualified practioner with experience
in such a field can often be a daunting task in itself
and requires a belief that it can actually work for
